The Maltese are one of the oldest European breeds of dogs with origins traced to Malta about 1500 B.C.  Their popularity rose during the reign of Queen Elizabeth as companions to the women of the royal court.  They first appeared in the United States in 1877.

They are easily recognized by their beautiful mantle of long, silky, pure white hair.  The coat is single (without an undercoat) and hangs long and flat over the sides of the body.  Kinkiness, curliness, or wooly texture is objectionable.  Light tan, or slight lemon on the ears is permissible, but not desirable.

The eyes are set not too far apart, very dark and round, their black rims enhancing their gentle expression.  Teeth meet in an even, edge-to-edge bite, or in a scissors bite.

Maltese are very gentle-mannered and affectionate, yet playful and animated.  They are intelligent and easy to train but can also be very strong-willed.  They enjoy being petted, fondled and groomed.

They are considered a very good watch dog.  An apartment can make a fine home because of their size, as long as you can socialize and take time to groom and play with them.

Weight is usually from 4 to 6 pounds, and height can be around 10 inches.

Generally, they are very healthy, but can be subject to genetic eye disorders.  Their life span is anywhere from 9 to 12 years.  Litter sizes are usually 2 to 4.

Personal care includes extensive coat care.  Shampoo once a week, but daily brushing is essential.  Special attention is needed to keep the eyes clean from staining.  Indoor activity suffices for exercise, but they enjoy a walk or run outdoors as well.
